Apple is normally expected to announce the iphone 13 lineup later this year and at least some of those iPhones will feature the return of Touch ID. That’s the news from Barclays analyst, Andrew Gardiner.
In a research note picked up by MacRumors, the analyst says that it’s expected that the iphone 13 will include a new Touch ID sensor that lives under the device’s display similar to that used by companies like Samsung.
It’s also thought that we can look forward to a new, smaller notch hitting the face ID technology.
For the coming iphone 13 cycle in 2H21, we foresee a a lot more securely integrated version of the existing structured light system, which will enable the long awaited reduction in the notch. On the rear, we do not anticipate Apple to broaden the adoption of the Lidar 3D sensor beyond the pro models.
For the 2H22 product cycle, we anticipate an architectural shift from structured light to time-of-flight, allowing for an even smaller footprint. based on our industry conversations, we do not think structured light underneath the screen is likely to be ready for mass deployment in 2H22. We also view the adoption of fingerprint-under-glass, that likely is added in the 2H21 iPhones, as a structural headwind for additional 3D sensing content at Apple and could be the safety feature of the future.
Apple brought Touch ID back to the iPad Air by means of the power button, something that is still a possibility for future iPhones. but Apple intends to offer an in-display option this time around, says Barclays. It’s also a feature that has been rumored by other sources, not least analyst Ming-Chi Kuo.
Apple is likely to announce the iphone 13 lineup later this year, potentially in or around September.
